Wow!!! Where has the time gone? Every day I think I'll write a blog post and then it's the next day! With 10 dogs (including the puppies) and the kids home on holiday, the days are flying past.
Lots has happened in the lives of the little pups.
They are now eating a pudding of just puppy chow, their teeth have come in, they have gotten toys to play with and chew on, they have weaned from Whitney, they are socializing with all the big dogs, they are spending time in the backyard in the sunshine, they have moved from the nursery to the living room where their real socialization has begun. Now they see us and hear us all constantly, as they are smack dab in the middle of the kitchen, dining room and living room.
Their potty training is going well. We are also working on their bite inhibition by letting them know what is too hard. The other pups and big dogs are also giving them feedback about what is appropriate behavior and play and biting.
They are almost 7 weeks old now!
They will have their 8 week vet check not this week, but the following week, along with their forts vaccinations. Then we will know who is potentially breedable. For now, all of their bites (how their teeth line up) are perfect, their pigments are perfect, their conformations perfect. The vet will inspect every inch and listen to their heart and lungs.
Their personalities are emerging. All the pups so far seem to be middle of the road puppies, which is amazing. No one is really wild, or overly confident or bossy, and no one is noticeably shy. They all seem to have really nice temperaments. They, of course, will continue to develop their personality traits, which will inform us as to who will be the best fit for each family.
The pups will be able to go home at ten weeks old, which is January 27th. So anytime from the weekend before to the weekend after is a good time to pick them up.
I hope everyone received their puppy primer book and that everyone is getting prepared for their new darling to come home.
I've sent out the suggested puppy items list before but I'll send it again just to make sure you all have it. Let me know if you have any questions.
We are now going to be in the official "socialization" stage which we start by having the pups meet 100 people before they leave us. The socialization process should continue until at least 1 year of age. I'll explain how to safely expose your pup to new people without exposing them to parvo, which is the main concern until they get their last set of vaccinations at 16 weeks. The more we all do to expose the pups to new sounds, sights, people, experiences, the calmer, more well-socialized they will be for life.
We will start inviting our friends over this week to play with the pups. They had their first visit today with our friends, Gypsy and Bizou. We are carrying them around the house and having them be with us individually while we watch TV, play games and go outside.
